If you hear tapping sounds in your plumbing pipes and the water pressure isn't what it should be at one or more faucets, there may be an air lock in the pipes. It isn't a serious problem, and it won't start a leak, but affected faucets won't work properly until it's removed. Stick it to the man review.
Description
Even though it's not supposed to, air sometimes gets into water pipes. It usually forms bubbles that travel with the water and come out through a faucet, but occasionally, they collect in a bend in the pipes and form a large, stationary bubble. Because air rises, the place where the bubble forms usually is in the highest section of pipe. The bubble restricts water flow and if it gets big enough, blocks it altogether. Air locks happen most often in hot water lines because they have lower pressure than cold water lines.
Removing an Air Lock
Increasing the water pressure in the pipe often pushes out the bubble. Try opening all the faucets in the house at once. The increased demand may create enough pressure to do the job. If the lock is affecting the hot water, a simple trick is to disconnect the washing machine and connect the hot and cold valves with one of the hoses. Open both valves all the way for 30 seconds. The pressure from the cold line should be enough to push the bubble backward and out of the pipe.
